Maldon West by-election: Lib Dem Sarah Dodsley becomes councillor, narrowly beating Reform UK

A HOTLY contested Maldon District Council by-election has been won by the Liberal Democrats.
The by-election for the Maldon West ward was called following the passing of councillor and former Maldon Town Mayor Flo Shaughnessy in February.
This afternoon (May 30), Lib Dem Sarah Dodsley was elected as her successor.
Speaking after the result was announced, Ms Dodsley said: “I am delighted to take on this role as councillor for Maldon West and I will endeavour to be a strong voice for our community.
“Thank you to everyone for their support and for voting for me.”
With 573 votes, Ms Dodsley beat Reform UK candidate Gary Robert Power by 85 votes. Mr Power came in second place with 488 votes.
In third place was Conservative candidate Jhual Hafiz, with 204 votes.
The Maldon District Independent Group previously held the seat, however candidate Carlie Mayes came in third place with 83 votes.
Green Party Candidate Janet Mary Band was fourth, with 33 votes.
The election makes the Liberal Democrats the second largest party on Maldon District Council, with seven members. The Conservatives remain the largest party, with nine members.
A spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats said: “Thank you to the voters of Maldon West.
“We're absolutely delighted to have Sarah on the Council, which helps grow the strong Lib Dem team. We will always stand up for our residents on the issues that matter.”
