Flo Shaughnessy - a town councillor, active local volunteer and former Mayor of Maldon - has died.

Current Maldon Town Mayor, Councillor Andrew Lay, made the announcement in an official statement published this afternoon.

It reads: "It is with deep sadness that I, on behalf of Maldon Town Council, inform you of the passing of Councillor Flo Shaughnessy on Sunday 16 February.

"Flo had been a dedicated member of the Town Council for 10 years, serving the community with passion and commitment. She held the position of Town Mayor in 2019-2020, during which she was supported by her husband, Terry. She was also a District Councillor for Maldon West Ward from 2015, tirelessly representing local residents.

"A passionate advocate for Maldon’s heritage, Flo was Chairman of the Town’s Heritage Working Group, where she worked to preserve and celebrate the Town’s rich history. She took a special interest in St Giles Ruins and Leech Memorial Garden, often leading tours and talks to share the significance of these cherished spaces with residents.

As Chair of the Maldon in Bloom group, she played a key role in enhancing the Town’s green spaces, ensuring it remained a wonderful place to live and visit. Her dedication to keeping Maldon beautiful will be remembered by all who met and knew her.

"In her capacity as a town councillor, Flo was a trustee of the Plume Educational Trust and member of the Maldon Tourism Group.

"Flo was always there to support new councillors and staff alike, sharing her knowledge in a calm and friendly manner. Her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to the community will leave a lasting impact.

Flo used to pop into our group of Farleigh patients at the West Maldon community. She was like a breath of fresh air when she visited., I'll miss her kindness.
