With fireworks displays planned throughout the Maldon District this weekend, pet owners are being urged to take extra steps to keep their animals safe.
More than two thirds of animals in the UK show signs of distress when fireworks go off, according to research by the RSPCA.
Dr Anna Foreman, a leading veterinary surgeon, has offered the following tips to keep pets “safe and calm” this weekend:
1. Keep pets indoors through the night
Ensure windows and doors are closed, and cat flaps are firmly shut. Dogs should be walked during the day, with workouts being a good way to relax them by night. Cats should be kept indoors for the night.
2. Block out the noises and flashes
Make sure you close windows and draw the curtains to block out the flashes. You could also turn up the volume on the TV or put on some music. Don't overdo it, though. You don't want these “masking” measures to be more annoying for your buddy than the fireworks themselves!
3. Create “safe dens” for your pets
These can be prepared for your pet in a quiet corner or under a bed - with soft bedding, blankets, old clothes or other soft, comforting and familiar smelling materials.
4. Fit your pets with a microchip
Microchips or ID tags with your up-to-date contact details mean that, if they do run away, your pets have a better chance of being quickly reunited with you.
5. Noiseless fireworks displays
Pet owners could consider noiseless fireworks or going to a public, organised display rather than having fireworks at home. Trying not to overcrowd the home and clearing the garden of debris are also important pieces of advice.
As families enjoy dazzling displays at Promenade Park in Maldon, Chigbrorough Road in Heybridge and elsewhere in the district, consider how to keep your pets safe this weekend.
