A great range of family-friendly activities are on offer in the Maldon District this week, including the 50th world-famous Mud Race and Maldon History Week.

Hundreds of daring competitors are set to tackle half a kilometre of dense Maldon mud this Sunday at 3pm at Promenade Park.

But before that, 50th anniversary celebrations will begin on Friday, with live music, street food and a bar from 5pm until 11pm.

On Saturday, Caroline Coastal FM will kick off festivities with a DJ set from 11am until 1.30pm. Large tepees will showcase locally produced food and drink, along with a range of live entertainment.

Joshua Holmes-Bright, presenter and assistant station manager at Caroline Coastal, said: “It’s exciting to be a part of the build up to one of Maldon’s biggest events of the year.

“We’re excited to kick off the day and show the people of Maldon that we’re the best place to go for great music and local chat.”

The first official Maldon Mud Race was held in 1974, when it is believed a pubgoer was challenged to serve a meal on the riverbank, dressed in a dinner jacket. Last year, the event raised more than £35,000 for charity.

Meanwhile, the Maeldune Heritage Centre is holding a special event to celebrate Maldon’s rich history throughout this week. The landmark at the top of Market Hill is open every day between 11am and 4am until Saturday, as part of Maldon History Week.

This year’s theme is “A Stitch In Time”, focusing on the centre’s 42-foot embroidery detailing the town’s past from the Battle of Maldon in 991AD.

Visitors are invited to enjoy free activities, including Saxon and Viking mask-making, the Battle of Maldon wordsearch, and a Maldon Embroidery quiz.

In Tolleshunt D'Arcy, the village will celebrate its annual fete this Saturday.

The Recreation Ground will host a funfair, dog show, entertainment, BBQ, beer tent, and more, from 2pm until 5pm.

All proceeds will go to the re-building of the Village Hall.
