MALDON Town Council has issued a statement after the former chairman of Maldon Carnival was jailed for sexual offences towards children.
Robert Slight, of Wantz Road, Maldon, was involved with the town's carnival for more than a decade. He has been jailed for 12 years, after admitting three counts of sexual assault and one count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.
Slight, 45, also admitted to possessing 1,300 indecent images of children.
This afternoon (March 3), Maldon Town Council issued a statement concerning the conviction.
A spokesperson said: "While the role of Town Mayor of Maldon previously held the ceremonial role of President of Maldon Carnival Association, the Mayor no longer holds any position with either the company or the more recently established Maldon Carnival Limited.
"The Council has expressly rescinded any involvement with Maldon Carnival, who operates as an independent entity."
John Driver, Mayor of Maldon, added: "Following the conclusion of the Essex Police investigation, I am pleased that justice has been served and Robert Slight has been held responsible for his very serious crimes.
"Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, as we recognise the long-term pain caused by this violation of trust."
Maldon Town Council says it keeps its safeguarding policy and procedures under review, to ensure the safety of children, young people and adults at risk.
A spokesperson added the town council also expects organisations it engages with to have appropriate policies and procedures in place.
Earlier, Maldon District Council leader Richard Siddall told Caroline Coastal he was "relieved" that Slight had been held accountable for his serious crimes.
Mr Siddall added: “My thoughts go out to his victims and their families, who will feel the effects of this for many years to come.”
