Althorne crash: man arrested after two people die in four-vehicle collision

A man and a woman have died following a four-vehicle crash near Althorne, as another man has been arrested and a police investigation has been launched.
Essex Police is appealing to the public for information, after the crash at 6.30pm on Wednesday (October 1).
A man in his 70s and a woman in her 30s were pronounced dead, while another man was taken to hospital with life-changing injuries.
Their families have been informed and are being supported while the investigation continues.
Meanwhile, a man from Grays has been arrested. The man, aged in his 30s, remains in custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.
Detectives are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a BMW X5 and Volkswagen Passat, both coloured grey, in the area in the moments before the collision.
Both vehicles travelled along Burnham Road from Burnham-On-Crouch, before entering Fambridge Road and becoming involved in the collision.
The road was closed throughout the evening, while emergency services attended the scene.
Drivers were urged to avoid the area, as officers remained on the scene throughout the night while enquiries continued.
Detectives have urged anyone in the area, either witnesses or people with footage, to get in touch.
