SIX fire crews from across Essex are tackling a blaze at two homes in Mayland this evening (June 22).

Firefighters were called to Katonia Avenue shortly after 4pm, where two semi-detached houses are "fully alight".

Residents in the surrounding area have been warned that there is "a lot of smoke" coming from the blaze.

Incident Commander Dan Wastell said: "Crews have worked hard and the fire is now under control. It is two semi-detached houses which are fully alight.

"There is still a lot of smoke coming from the incident so if you live in the area please keep your windows and doors closed."

An Aerial Ladder Platform has been brought in from Chelmsford, to help tackle the fire from above.

Essex Fire and Rescue crews from Burnham, Maldon, South Woodham Ferrers, and Witham are also at the scene. Additional crews from Rochford and Tollesbury have been requested to support the incident.

A cordon has been established at the scene, to protect the area from unauthorised access while work continues. The scene guard is set to remain in place overnight.

An investigation into the cause of the fire will begin tomorrow, a fire service spokesperson has said.

More information is set to follow.
